CAFE HOUSING

CALL FOR MANIFESTOS

Canadian architecture students, intern architects/architectural interns, syllabus students and international architecture degree holders (who live in Canada but are not yet licensed in Canada) – are invited to create and share manifestos, articulating a vision, question or concern about the future of housing in Canada. Manifestos may describe a desire or demand; a provocation or protest; a call to action or a call to pause, think and act differently.

ELIGIBILITY

You must be a Canadian architecture student, intern architect/architectural intern, syllabus student or international architecture degree holders (who lives in Canada but is not yet licensed in Canada).

SUBMISION REQUIREMENTS

  2. Upload submission (as part of application)

Manifestos may be submitted in any of the following formats (multiple submissions are welcome):

  1. Poster

Mix of graphics and text (or just text) in a design that is both visually-striking and thought-provoking.

SUBMISSION FORMAT:

File type: PDF (flat)

Size of Sheet: 24” x 36” (Landscape orientation)

File size: (max. 15 MB)

Font style: Chicago

This could be mostly imagery with some minor supporting text, or mostly text with little to know supporting imagery. If it is a text-based submission, it must be a maximum of 1500 words and composed in prose or poetry in English, French or any indigenous language. Text submissions may be conceived as a single striking word, stirring statement, or stimulating question; or as a short story or essay. All images, quotes and sources must include citations.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury - presented anonymously - consisting of a mix of BAC-DAC and CASA directors. The jury will select shortlisted entries based on the following key design criteria:

    • Relevance to the competition topic/brief

    • Creative interpretation of the competition theme and conceptual clarity

    • Excellence in execution with regards to visual representation (including legibility and coherence)

      The jury reserves the right to select any number of entries to be shortlisted.

  2. The shortlisted entries will be presented at the CAFE event on January 31 and February 1, 2025, shared on CASA and BAC-DAC social media and websites, and shared in a Canadian Architect article.

  3. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will receive prizes.

HONORARIA

1st place: $1000 cash prize

2nd place: $500 cash prize

3rd place: $250 cash prize
